What assistive technology can help with learning and studying?
The assistive technology that can help with studying and learning
is usually technology that helps a student to organize, practice,
or remember material and assignments presented in text and lecture.
Here is a list of common assistive technology solutions for studying
and learning:
Assistive Technology for Learning and Studying
- Print or picture schedule
- Low tech aids to find materials (e.g. index tabs, color coded folders)
- Highlight text (e.g. markers, highlight tape, ruler, etc.)
- Recorded material (books on tape, taped lectures with number coded index, etc.)
- Voice output reminders for assignments, steps of task, etc
- Electronic organizers
- Pagers and electronic reminders
- Single word scanners
- Hand-held scanners
- Software for concept development/manipulation of objects
- Software for outlining and organization of ideas
- Palm computers
When is it appropriate?
Many of the assistive technology solutions used for studying
and learning are solutions used occasionally by every student.
They are considered assistive technology when the student must use them in order to be successful. While it is always a good
idea to use the simplest assistive technology solution that will
help the child accomplish the task, this is particularly important
when the technology is used for studying and learning. Complex
assistive technology solutions often require the student to learn
and remember additional information in order to use them and can
sometimes interfere with the learning process if they are too
complex.
Where can I go for help?
A special education and general education teacher is often expert in identifying useful strategies to help with studying and learning. When a more complex assistive technology solution is needed, the assistive technology specialist may be of assistance.
